NeuGen is made for the generation of dendritic and axonal morphology of realistic neurons and networks in 3D.


NeuGen may be run on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Before you can start NeuGen, please send us some informations about you and in what field you work. You will need a license key to start NeuGen. To receive your license key, please send an email to .

Download NeuGen.

Decompress the downloaded file into a directory on the local system. To run NeuGen, move the decompressed directory to one of your choice.

Now you can start NeuGen by double-clicking the NeuGenJava.jar or via a command shell. To run the project from the command line, go to the dist folder and type the following: java -jar NeuGen3D.jar

Starting a new project

  1.   To create a project click on the new project button in the tool bar.
  2. Click on the new next button to create a neocortex project.

  3. Type the name of the project and click on the finish button.

  4. Edit the parameters.

  5.   Press the start button in the tool bar and wait a few moments.

  6.   Click on the visualize button to visualize the result.

  7.   Click on the validate button to validate the net.

  8.   Export to HOC format.

Previous distributions

  1. Download and install NeuGen
  2. Start NeuGen in the NeuGen folder by double-clicking the icon or by typing: java -jar NeuGenGui.jar in a command shell
  3. Edit the configuration file Param.neu
  4. Press the start button and wait a few moments
  5. Visualize the result with NeuGen or use the output files with NEURON

Now you can restart the net generator by pressing the Start button again to get a different realization with the same parameters (don't forget to change the output options) or you can change the configuration parameters and restart then to get another neuron or neuronal net.
